Carob Tree

Whilst working on “El Territorio”, I found a 144 hectare piece of land that belonged to my father but that he had to abandon due to the widespread violence in my country. This land is lost in the area of El Catatumbo in Norte de Santander. It is a place where many conflicts coincide fuelled by different issues such as gold, oil, biodiversity, the border with Venezuela, drug trafficking and smuggling routes, guerrillas, and disputes between settlers and people who have traditionally lived there such as indigenous groups like the Bari people. There has always been a struggle over the land here, so I have not been able to visit the land.
As a result of my research, I developed four pieces of work: “Extensión de terreno que se ve desde un sitio” (Plot of land that can be seen from a place), “Intercambio de terreno” (Land Exchange), “Se busca terreno en Colombia” (Wanted: Land in Colombia) and “El Algarrobo” (Carob Tree).
“El Algarrobo” is a filing cabinet with landscapes of carob trees that lend their name to this piece of land. There are eight drawings inside the filing cabinet, where they can be seen thanks to an ultraviolet light installed in the cabinet. As soon as the cabinet is open, the images disappear in broad daylight and the paper looks blank. This object is accompanied by the actual deeds of the piece of land.
Installation: drawings, invisible ink, filling cabinet and deeds. 2013
